Who’s Next After Thanos? Speculating On The Future Villains of The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Story Highlights
  • Kang The Conqueror
  • Magneto
  • Mephisto
  • Dormammu
  • Red Skull

Without villains, there can be no heroes. When the credits rolled on Avengers: Endgame, fans wondered, “Who’s next?” Thanos had been the greatest danger to the MCU and its defenders for a long time. To choose their next “big evil,” Marvel has a multitude of villains to select from. From terrible tyrants like Dr. Doom to the Devil himself, Mephisto. With Scarlet Witch going crazy in Doctor Strange, nothing seems too far-fetched. Also, there are plenty of villains previously established in the MCU who would be great candidates for comebacks.

Here are the ones we believe have a chance!

Kang The Conqueror

A Time traveler and frequent visitor to other universes, Kang the Conqueror is a fixture of the multiverse. Fans have witnessed various Kang appearances as he has crossed into our reality from other realities. Kang has appeared in stories where he is either a hero or a villain, often interacting with or opposing the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. Many people think Kang the Conqueror has already been introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Loki series concludes with Loki and Sylvie tracking down the guy manipulating time and preventing the birth of other realities. Some of the character’s fans have concluded that he is truly Kang the Conqueror based on all the hints and clues they have found identifying him with that name.

Magneto

Magneto, as the head of the Brotherhood of Mutants and one of the most powerful mutants, is typically seen as an adversary of the X-Men. Eight X-Men movies in, Magneto has shown again and again that he can bring mayhem to the lives of heroes. Magneto is responsible for numerous global and occasionally reality-bending occurrences in the comics. Seeing the destruction he can wreak, he is what is needed in MCU to keep his inspiration alive.

Mephisto

Mephisto is as near as Marvel gets to having a demon character. He rules over an alternate universe where people often clash with Ghost Rider and Silver Surfer. Nothing can ever alter him since he is a creature of pure evil. Mephisto also had a significant role in the One More Day Spider-Man series.

Since the debut of Disney+’s WandaVision, people have been speculating heavily about Mephisto. One More Day adaptations set in the MCU would give the franchise a much-needed facelift and jolt the audience to its core.

Dormammu

Dormammu is a wicked being from another realm that plans to cause widespread destruction. Dormammu is a master of the mystical arts and a formidable opponent who can hold his own against cosmic creatures. He is often seen creating trouble for Doctor Strange.

Dormammu had a significant role as Doctor Strange’s antagonist. Dormammu, who was very briefly introduced in the film, was able to pose a danger to Earth that may have ended it all. The new Avengers could face Dormammu as their next challenge.

Red Skull

Red Skull isn’t simply a crazy guy who tried to make a super soldier serum that didn’t work. Cosmic Skull, as his name suggests, is armed with cosmic-level abilities that the combined might of the Avengers can only defeat.

Red Skull’s intergalactic adventures as the protector of the soul stone have previously been seen in the films Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. A major villain like Red Skull wouldn’t be content with a cameo appearance from Marvel. The Avengers had best get ready to fight Cosmic Skull when he arrived.

These villain guesses are not only theories but, in some twisted way, also anticipated and fan favorites. We can’t have action without an antagonist anyway.
