A Series of Deadly Attacks in Balochistan
In recent days, Balochistan, a province in southwestern Pakistan, has been shaken by a series of brutal terrorist attacks that have claimed over 50 lives, including civilians and security personnel. These attacks have sparked outrage and grief across the country, drawing international condemnation, including a strong response from the United States.
US Department of Defense Responds
The US Department of Defense, through its Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, expressed deep sorrow and condemnation for the attacks. Singh stated, “We strongly condemn any terrorist attack like that, and of course, our thoughts are with those who lost their lives during that attack.” While the US has not yet offered direct assistance to Pakistan in combating these terror groups, Singh indicated that the US is open to future cooperation if needed.
Pakistan’s Strong Response
The attacks have deeply affected Pakistan, particularly Balochistan, which has been a hotspot for militant activities in recent years. In one of the deadliest incidents, 23 passengers were brutally killed after being forcibly removed from buses and trucks in the Musakhel area. Additional attacks in Kalat and during clearance operations have resulted in further loss of life among security forces.
In response, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Balochistan, where he vowed to eradicate terrorism from the province. Sharif declared that the "blood of martyrs will not go in vain," emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism and ruling out any negotiations with those who engage in violence.
Government Measures to Combat Terrorism
To strengthen its counter-terrorism efforts, the Pakistani government announced several new measures. These include deploying more skilled officers to Balochistan, enhancing the capacity of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), and providing additional resources for the province's development. Prime Minister Sharif also introduced incentives for officers serving in Balochistan, including travel allowances for their families and performance-based evaluations.
Foreign Involvement and Strategic Challenges
Prime Minister Sharif hinted at the involvement of foreign elements in these attacks, suggesting they are part of a broader conspiracy to destabilize Balochistan and hinder its progress, particularly regarding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects. The government is determined to counter these threats, with plans guided by Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir.
Preparing for the SCO Summit Amid Security Concerns
These attacks come at a sensitive time for Pakistan, as the country prepares to host the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in October. There are concerns that these terrorist incidents are part of a deliberate attempt to sabotage the summit. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi described the attacks as a “plot to sabotage” the upcoming event, reinforcing the government's resolve to take stringent action against those who challenge the state’s authority.
The Ongoing Struggle Against Terrorism
Balochistan has long been a troubled region, with various militant groups, including the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), carrying out attacks against civilians and security forces. The province's proximity to Afghanistan and Iran adds to its strategic importance but also its vulnerability to cross-border terrorism. Since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, there has been a noticeable increase in militant activities in Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan.
