Tight Race: Multan Sultans vs Lahore Qalandars

Much like in previous editions of the PSL, the Multan Sultans have been playing excellent cricket. They’ve made 2 PSL finals, won one, and have played in 3 consecutive qualifier playoffs, meaning they’ve been top 2 in the last three editions.

This article will discuss why they have the best chance at dethroning the Lahore Qalandars.

Leading Wicket Takers

The leading wicket-takers in PSL are Ihsanullah and Abbas Afridi. Ihsanullah has been a revelation for the Sultans. As a tall man, his high release point has caused batsmen nightmares. He has also joined the club of Pakistani bowlers constantly clicking 145+ Km/h

Abbas Afridi, on the other hand, leads the league in wickets. He also accomplished one of the rarest feats in cricket, taking a hat trick against the Quetta Gladiators. This hat trick was part of a sensational 5-wicket haul that led his team to victory. Together, they spearhead perhaps the best bowling attack in the whole league.

Batting Brilliance

As if having the leading wicket-takers wasn’t enough, Multan Sultans also has the leading run scorer in the PSL in Rizwan. His fantastic T20 form for the Pakistan National Team has carried on into the PSL, as he has been dominant. But it’s not just Rizwan that’s been sensational with the bat. Multan boasts an incredible batting lineup featuring Rilee Russouw and Usman Khan.

How dominant, you ask?

Rilee Russouw scored a century against Peshawar Zalmi in just 41 balls, breaking the PSL record for the fastest century ever. Coincidentally, that was a record he held for his 43-ball century against the Quetta Gladiators in the 2020 PSL. However, his teammate Usman Khan rinsed the Quetta Gladiators the next day, scoring a century on just 36 deliveries. This also means that the Quetta Gladiators have conceded 2 of the 3 fastest centuries in PSL history, but that’s a discussion for another day.

For now, this Multan Sultan team features not one, not two, but three centurions. They have a strong claim for the best batting attack in the PSL as anyone and certainly have the most reliable batting attack.

Beating the Best

So, if they have the two leading wicket-takers and the leading run-scorer, why aren’t Multan Sultans the favorites to win the PSL?

That’s because there is still a slight problem with the most dominant team in the PSL: the Lahore Qalandars. They have been nothing short of excellent and have beaten everyone in the PSL. Well, everyone but the Karachi Kings, but they haven’t qualified, so it doesn’t matter.

The two matches Multan has played against the Qalandars have been close, particularly the opening match of the PSL, which Lahore only eked out by one run. However, they are undefeated against the Sultans this season and have the mental edge. If Multan is to beat Lahore in their upcoming qualifier, they must bring their absolute A-Game.

In summary, while the Lahore Qalandars are still the team to beat, Multan Sultan is best equipped to beat them. They have all the necessary firepower to dethrone Lahore; it’s just a matter of who wants it more. One thing is for certain: this match will be dynamite, and we can’t wait for it.
