Tennis Star Aisam-ul-Haq Wins PTF Presidency by One Vote

Pakistan’s tennis ace Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi has been elected as the new president of the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) for a four-year term, from 2024 to 2028. He defeated his rival, Major General (retd) Asghar Nawaz, by a margin of 8–7 in a closely fought election held at the PTF SDA Tennis Complex in Islamabad.

This is a historic achievement for Aisam-ul-Haq, who is the first active tennis player to become the president of the PTF. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role, having represented Pakistan in various international tournaments and won several titles in doubles and mixed doubles events. He is currently ranked 43rd in the world in men’s doubles.

Aisam-ul-Haq said he was excited and honored to take up the responsibility of leading the PTF, which was previously headed by Salim Saifullah Khan. He said he had learned a lot from playing at the highest level and would try to share his insights and skills with the Pakistani players, coaches, and trainers. He said his goal was to improve the standard and performance of tennis in Pakistan and to promote the sport among the youth.

“I’m very excited at the win. In my 25 years playing career I tried my best to bring laurels for my country and now as president of the federation I will be trying to deliver my best,” Aisam-ul-Haq told the media after winning the election. “It’s my goal to take Pakistan tennis to new heights and work for the betterment of players, coaches, and trainers. I’ll not disappoint my nation,” he added.

Aisam-ul-Haq also thanked his supporters and the representatives of the 15 affiliated units of the PTF who participated in the election. He said he would work with all the stakeholders to develop a comprehensive plan and strategy for the growth and development of tennis in Pakistan. He said he would also seek the cooperation and guidance of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) to enhance the opportunities and exposure for Pakistani players.

Aisam-ul-Haq will be joined by a new leadership team at the PTF, comprising Lt. Col. (retd) Ziauddin Tufail as the secretary general and M. Arif Qureshi as the treasurer. Ziauddin Tufail secured 8 votes against Suleman Javed’s 7, while Arif Qureshi got 9 votes against Umer Farooq’s 6.

The new PTF leadership has already received congratulations and best wishes from various quarters, including the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA), the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB), the Pakistan Sports Writers Federation (PSWF), and the Pakistan Davis Cup team. They have also expressed their confidence and support for Aisam-ul-Haq and his team, hoping that they will take Pakistan tennis to new levels of success and glory.
