The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has officially entered a new era after a historic franchise auction that expanded the tournament to eight teams for the first time. Sialkot and Hyderabad were confirmed as the league’s newest franchises following intense bidding that shattered previous financial records and highlighted the PSL’s growing global appeal.
The expansion auction, held at the Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad, attracted strong interest from both local and international investors, underlining the league’s transformation into one of South Asia’s most valuable sporting properties.
Record-Breaking Bids Redefine PSL Franchise Values
Sialkot emerged as the most expensive franchise in PSL history after OZ Developers secured the team with a staggering bid of Rs1.85 billion per year. The final round saw OZ Developers locked in a fierce bidding war with software firm I2c, whose last offer stood at Rs1.82 billion before OZ raised the stakes to claim the franchise.
Moments earlier, Hyderabad was acquired by the FKS Group for Rs1.75 billion annually, making it the second-most expensive franchise ever sold in the league. FKS also faced competition from I2c during the first round of bidding, which concluded with a base price significantly exceeded.
These figures represent a dramatic shift in the PSL’s commercial landscape. Hyderabad’s valuation alone is nearly three times higher than that of Lahore Qalandars, previously the league’s most expensive active franchise.
PSL Expands to Eight Teams After a Decade
The addition of Sialkot and Hyderabad completes the PSL’s long-awaited expansion, ten years after the league’s launch in 2015. Both cities will make their first-ever appearance in the competition when PSL 11 begins, scheduled to run from March 26 to May 3.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had shortlisted several cities for expansion, including Faisalabad, Gilgit, Muzaffarabad, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, and Hyderabad. Ultimately, Sialkot and Hyderabad were selected based on investor interest, commercial viability, and regional representation.
The current PSL lineup now includes Lahore Qalandars, Islamabad United, Peshawar Zalmi, Quetta Gladiators, Karachi Kings, Multan Sultans, Sialkot, and Hyderabad.
Strong International Interest and Transparent Bidding
The auction drew participation from a diverse group of bidders, including FKS Group, OZ Developers, Aim Next Inc, Deharki Sugar Mills, Inverex Solar, I2c, Jazz, Prism Developers, VGO TEL, and Walee Pakistan.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi later revealed that five US-based companies took part in the bidding process, calling it “extremely competitive.” He emphasized that special measures were implemented to ensure complete transparency, describing the auction as a success not only for the PSL but also for Pakistan cricket as a whole.
Leadership, Vision, and Global Recognition
The auction was hosted by legendary former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram, alongside PSL Chief Executive Salman Naseer. Addressing attendees, Naseer described the moment as the culmination of ten years of steady growth.
Akram reminded bidders that owning a PSL franchise goes beyond financial investment, highlighting opportunities such as branding, fan engagement, kit design, and player interaction. The event also gained international attention, with US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker welcoming American participation in the PSL and describing it as a positive signal for Pakistan’s sports and investment climate.
Owners Share Vision for Sialkot and Hyderabad
FKS Group President Fawad Sarwar called the acquisition of Hyderabad the fulfillment of a long-standing ambition. He stated that the investment was about more than cricket, adding that the franchise could strengthen sporting and commercial ties between Pakistan and the United States.
Meanwhile, OZ Developers chief Hamza Majeed highlighted Sialkot’s historic connection to cricket and global sports manufacturing. He described the city as a natural fit for the PSL and expressed confidence that the team would make an immediate impact in its debut season.
PCB officials also confirmed that infrastructure development in both Sialkot and Hyderabad is part of the league’s broader expansion strategy.
A New Commercial and Competitive Chapter for PSL
With franchise valuations reaching unprecedented levels, the PSL has firmly established itself as a major force in international T20 cricket. The combined annual value of the Sialkot and Hyderabad franchises now rivals that of three established teams, highlighting the league’s exponential growth.
As PSL 11 approaches, the addition of two new teams is expected to increase competition, expand fan engagement, and further strengthen Pakistan’s position on the global cricketing stage.
