Shaheen Afridi Becomes Third Bowler to Take 100 PSL Wickets, Lahore Qalandars Win by 17 Runs

Lahore Qalandars finally tasted victory in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 after defeating Islamabad United by 17 runs at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Wednesday. The match also witnessed a historic moment as Lahore Qalandars’ captain Shaheen Afridi became the third bowler to take 100 wickets in the PSL.

Shaheen Afridi achieved the feat by dismissing Naseem Shah in the 18th over of Islamabad United’s chase, which ended at 146 for 9 in 20 overs. Shaheen Afridi finished with figures of 2 for 32 in four overs, taking his PSL wicket tally to 100 in 57 matches. He is the third bowler to reach the milestone after Wahab Riaz (113) and Hasan Ali (107), who are also playing in the ongoing season.

Shaheen Afridi’s performance was crucial in defending a modest total of 162 for 7, which was built on the back of a half-century by Rassie van der Dussen. The South African batsman scored 64 off 44 balls, hitting four fours and four sixes, and shared a 71-run stand with David Wiese (24 not out) for the sixth wicket. Lahore Qalandars had a shaky start as they lost both their openers Sahibzada Farhan (2) and Fakhar Zaman (10) inside the powerplay.

Islamabad United’s bowlers did a commendable job in restricting Lahore Qalandars, with Rumman Raees being the pick of the lot with 2 for 19 in four overs. Naseem Shah, Hunain Shah, Imad Wasim, Faheem Ashraf, and Shadab Khan also chipped in with a wicket each.

However, Islamabad United’s batting failed to live up to the expectations as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Shaheen Afridi gave Lahore Qalandars a dream start by removing Alex Hales for a duck in the first over. Zaman Khan then struck in his first over, sending back Agha Salman for 4. Shadab Khan (7) was cleaned up by a yorker from Zaman Khan. Colin Munro (15) was runout by Jahandad Khan in the sixth over. Jahandad Khan took Jordan Cox’s wicket in the seventh over.

Islamabad United were reduced to 73 for 7 in the 7th over and looked out of the contest. However, Azam Khan (29) and Faheem Ashraf (41 not out) kept them in the hunt with a 35-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Azam Khan hit two sixes in his 19-ball knock before falling to Ahsan Hafeez. Naseem Shah then played a cameo of 27 off 16 balls, hitting two fours and two sixes, and added 38 runs with Faheem Ashraf for the eighth wicket.

Naseem Shah’s dismissal in the 18th over, which also gave Shaheen Afridi his 100th PSL wicket, dashed Islamabad United’s hopes of a miraculous chase. Faheem Ashraf tried his best to keep them alive, hitting four fours and one six in his 31-ball innings, but could not find enough support from the other end. Zaman Khan was the star of Lahore Qalandars’ bowling, taking 4 for 37 in four overs.

The win was Lahore Qalandars’ first in eight matches and remained at the sixth spot in the points table with three points. Islamabad United, on the other hand, suffered their fourth loss in eight matches, and remained at the fourth spot with seven points.
