Sartaj Aziz, a Veteran of Pakistan Movement and Former Finance Minister, Passes Away at 94

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and former finance minister Sartaj Aziz passed away on Tuesday at the age of 94. He was suffering from old age-related ailments and breathed his last in Islamabad.

Sartaj Aziz was a veteran of Pakistan movement and a great asset for the nation. He had a long and distinguished political career, spanning over six decades, during which he served on various key governmental posts, including the minister for finance and economic affairs, the adviser to the prime minister on national security and foreign affairs, and the senator.

He was also a renowned economist, who shaped the economic policies of Pakistan during his tenure in the Ministry of Finance and the Planning Commission. He had a rich academic background, having studied economics at Punjab University and public administration at Harvard Kennedy School. He also served in the international arena, as the assistant president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the director of the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s Commodities and Trade Division.

He was a respected figure in the national discourse, who had keen insights and analysis on economic and political issues. He authored several books and articles, sharing his knowledge and perspective with the public. He was also a close associate and confidant of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, and a senior leader of the PML-N.

His demise was confirmed by PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal, who expressed his deep sorrow and grief in an X post. He said that he had the honour of working with Sartaj Aziz very closely and would never forget his affection and guidance. He also praised his services for the nation and his role in the Pakistan movement. He prayed for his forgiveness and patience for his family.

His death was also condoled by President Arif Alvi, who expressed his solidarity with the bereaved family and lauded his contributions to the country. He said that Sartaj Aziz was a seasoned politician and a visionary economist, who had left a lasting legacy. He prayed for his eternal peace and high rank in Jannah.

Other political leaders and personalities also paid tribute to Sartaj Aziz, remembering his achievements and qualities. They said that he was a man of integrity, wisdom, and patriotism, who always worked for the betterment of Pakistan and its people. They said that he was a source of inspiration and guidance for many, and his death was a huge loss for the nation.

Sartaj Aziz was born in February 1929 in Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He was married to Nishat Afza, and had four children and nine grandchildren. He will be laid to rest in Islamabad on Wednesday, after his funeral prayers.
