Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for significant changes to the global financial system to help developing nations achieve their Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Speaking at the first virtual "Summit of the Future" at the United Nations, he stressed the urgent need for fair financial support and access to new technologies for countries in the Global South.
During his speech, PM Shehbaz emphasized the importance of concessional financing (low-interest loans), increased development assistance, and more lending from global financial institutions. He argued that these reforms are crucial for vulnerable countries to overcome challenges like poverty, climate change, and economic instability.
The prime minister also highlighted the need for "climate debt swaps" and "equitable debt relief" to help countries burdened by high levels of debt, many of which are also facing the impacts of climate change. He noted that developing nations, especially in the Global South, require better access to technology to empower their citizens and drive progress.
At the same time, PM Shehbaz warned of the risks posed by new technologies if they fall into the wrong hands. He called for strong safeguards to prevent misuse and ensure that advancements benefit everyone, particularly those in poorer regions.
In a powerful message about global unity, PM Shehbaz said that the world must come together to tackle these challenges, adding that inequalities and injustices create opportunities for harmful forces to thrive. He stressed that true progress can only be achieved through collective efforts and cooperation on an international scale.
The prime minister's speech was a call for action to make the global financial system more inclusive, ensuring that all nations, especially those in the Global South, have the resources and tools needed to thrive in today’s world.
