PCB Chairman Lauds ‘Fantastic’ Welcome for Pakistan Team in India

Zaka Ashraf, Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) Management Committee, has praised the warm reception given to the Pakistan cricket team in India ahead of the World Cup 2023. In a recent press release by PCB, Ashraf described the welcome as "fantastic", highlighting the mutual admiration between Indian and Pakistani cricket fans.

Ashraf stated, "Whenever India and Pakistan enter the cricket field, they emerge as traditional rivals but not as enemies." He hoped the Pakistani team, also known as the Men in Green, would continue to receive the same warmth throughout the tournament. He emphasized that just like the Indian cricket teams visiting Pakistan, the Green Shirts have always been welcomed warmly.

The PCB chief further stressed that cricket has always served as a bridge between the two nations, with cricketers from both countries enjoying popularity among fans on both sides of the border. He noted that cricket matches between India and Pakistan garner global attention, making them more significant than other sports contests.

Ashraf also expressed his desire to restore bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan, allowing millions of cricket fans from both nations to watch the contest live. He voiced his hope that the Indian team would visit Pakistan soon.

The Pakistan cricket team received a rousing welcome from Indian fans at the airport earlier this week upon their arrival for the World Cup 2023. The excited crowds, held back by officers, cheered for team captain Babar Azam as the Pakistani contingent arrived in the southern Indian city for the one-day international (ODI) tournament, which begins on October 5.

Pakistan's star pacer Shaheen Afridi expressed his excitement about the welcome by posting a message on his social media stating: "Great welcome thus far!" Meanwhile, wicketkeeper Muhammad Rizwan was "amazed" by the fans' reception when they reached Hyderabad.

The Pakistan team's schedule for the ICC World Cup 2023 is as follows:

  • October 6 — vs Netherlands in Hyderabad
  • October 10 — vs Sri Lanka in Hyderabad
