In a bold reaffirmation of support, Pakistan’s UN Ambassador has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, urging the global community to act now amid the ongoing crisis. Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, made this urgent call during a key meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) ambassadors in New York on April 8, 2025.
The Gaza conflict, which began in October 2023 after attacks by Hamas, has resulted in a devastating loss of life. Over 50,000 Palestinians, including many women and children, have been killed, while countless others have suffered from the ongoing violence. Pakistan has been a consistent voice on the global stage, calling for an end to the violence and humanitarian relief for the region.
During the OIC meeting, Ambassador Ahmad emphasized the importance of stopping the violence immediately. He called for more than just a ceasefire; Pakistan is advocating for the lifting of Gaza’s blockade, ensuring humanitarian aid reaches those in need, and ending the forced displacement of Palestinian families. "Pakistan stands firmly with the Palestinian people, and we will continue to advocate for their right to a peaceful, independent state," Ambassador Ahmad stated.
Pakistan, which does not recognize Israel, has consistently championed the Palestinian cause, pushing for the creation of an independent Palestinian state based on borders that existed before 1967. The country has raised its concerns in numerous international forums, including the UN Security Council, and has been at the forefront of calls for accountability and peace in Gaza.
The OIC meeting also addressed other significant issues, including the situation in Syria. Foreign ministers from Bahrain and Kyrgyzstan shared their countries' plans to seek non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council for the upcoming 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 terms.
As global powers continue to debate solutions, Pakistan remains at the forefront, ensuring the Palestinian cause stays in the international spotlight and working relentlessly to achieve lasting peace in the region. The country’s unwavering commitment to working alongside other OIC member states highlights its dedication to advancing the collective interests of the Muslim world and securing justice for Palestine.
