The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is back with its eighth edition. The tournament opened on Monday at the Multan Cricket Stadium with a grand ceremony that dazzled the audience. The event, which had a half-hour delay, featured various performers and speeches that added excitement and anticipation for the upcoming matches.

A Historic Inaugural Match in Multan

This year’s PSL edition marks a historical first as the inaugural match was held in Multan. HBL President and CEO Muhammad Aurangzeb congratulated the Pakistan Cricket Board for organizing the tournament for the eighth time. He said, “HBL PSL has moved from strength to strength. All the stakeholders have made a concerted effort to make this a success.” The PSL has grown over the years, and this edition is set to operate at its maximum potential. The tournament will be held across four home venues, with Multan and Rawalpindi joining Karachi and Lahore.

Star-Studded Performances

The ceremony kicked off with singer Aima Baig’s breathtaking national anthem performance while clad in an ethereal white gown. Sahir Ali Bagga and Baig then took to the stage for their performance, getting the crowd roaring. Asim Azhar, Faris Shafi, and Shae Gill followed, performing this year’s official anthem, “Sab Sitarey Humaray.” The performances were stunning, setting the tone for the excitement and thrill that the PSL brings to fans.

Opening Match between Multan Sultans and Lahore Qalandars

The tournament’s first match was between the Multan Sultans and Lahore Qalandars. Led by Pakistan’s star wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan, Multan boasts a batting-heavy core of players featuring Australia’s Tim David, South African Rilee Rossouw, his compatriot David Miller, and West Indies veteran Kieran Pollard. The match was set to be thrilling and exciting, with fans rooting for their favorite team to win.

And the match seemed to be leaning in Multan’s favor. The opening partnership of Rizwan and Shan Masood provided 100 runs, and all signs pointed to them winning, even till the end. However, Lahore Qalandars are the reigning champions for a reason. They rallied towards the end with an incredible bowling performance at the death, led by none other than Pakistan’s clutch performer Haris Rauf, and ended up winning the match.
