Nafay Sets New PSL Record in Quetta Gladiators’ Thrilling Chase Against Lahore Qalandars

Quetta Gladiators’ young batsman Khawaja Nafay achieved a remarkable feat in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season nine on Monday, as he played a match-winning knock of 60 not out off 31 balls against Lahore Qalandars at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Nafay, who came in to bat at number three, faced only one dot ball in his entire innings, setting a new record in the PSL history. He hit four fours and three sixes, scoring at a strike rate of 193.54, and guided Quetta Gladiators to a five-wicket victory with five balls to spare.

Quetta Gladiators were chasing a challenging target of 188, after Lahore Qalandars posted 187 for 7 in their 20 overs. Lahore Qalandars’ opener batter Sahibzada Farhan scored 62 off 43 balls, while emerging player Jahandad Khan made a brilliant 45 runs off 17 balls. Quetta Gladiators’ bowlers Akeal Hosein and Mohammad Hasnain took two wickets each.

Quetta Gladiators’ openers Jason Roy and Saud Shakeel gave a solid start to the chase, adding 69 runs in seven overs. Roy scored 24 off 19 balls, while Shakeel made 40 off 23 balls. Lahore Qalandars’ spinner Sikandar Raza dismissed Roy while Zaman Khan took Shakeel’s wicket, bringing Nafay to the crease.

Nafay then took charge of the chase, and formed crucial partnerships with captain Rilee Rossouw, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Sherfane Rutherford. He kept the scoreboard ticking with his aggressive batting, and did not let the pressure of the run rate affect him. He reached his maiden PSL fifty in 27 balls, and finished the game with a six over mid-wicket.

Nafay’s innings was hailed by cricket experts and fans as one of the best in the PSL history. According to Grassroots Cricket, out of the 823 innings in the PSL where batters have faced 25 or more balls, Nafay is the first one to face just one dot ball. The previous lowest was two dots, achieved by Kamran Akmal and Luke Ronchi.

With this win, Quetta Gladiators climbed to the top of the PSL 9 points table, with two wins in two matches. Lahore Qalandars, on the other hand, suffered their second consecutive loss, and are at the bottom of the table.

The fifth match of the PSL 9 will be played between Multan Sultans and Islamabad United today in Multan. Multan Sultans are coming off a convincing win over Karachi Kings in their first match, while Islamabad United also started their campaign with a thumping win over Lahore Qalandars. Both the teams will be looking to continue their winning momentum and challenge Quetta Gladiators for the top spot.
