Lahore ASP Shehrbano Naqvi Lauded by COAS for Bravery in Diffusing Mob Situation

In a recent incident that has drawn widespread attention, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi of Lahore Gulberg Circle demonstrated exceptional courage and professionalism. She successfully diffused a volatile situation in Lahore’s bustling Ichra Bazaar, earning high praise from Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir.

On February 26, 2024, a crowd had gathered outside a shop in Ichra Bazaar, accusing a woman of blasphemy. The mob alleged that the woman’s shirt bore Quranic verses. The woman, terrified and seeking refuge in a nearby shop, was the subject of a video clip that circulated on social media.

Recognizing the sensitivity of the situation, police officials on the scene called for backup. ASP Shehrbano Naqvi led the responding team, engaging with the crowd and taking the woman into protective custody. The woman was then safely transported to the police station under heightened security measures.

Following the incident, a video emerged showing the woman apologizing alongside religious scholars. The Punjab police chief subsequently recommended ASP Naqvi for the prestigious Quaid-i-Azam Police Medal (QPM), the highest honor for bravery in law enforcement in Pakistan.

ASP Shehrbano was later invited to the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, where she met with COAS General Asim Munir. The COAS commended her selfless devotion to duty and professionalism in managing the tense situation.

General Munir also highlighted the significant role of women in all aspects of life in Pakistan. He emphasized that the respect for women is deeply rooted in Pakistani religion and social ethos. He further underscored the importance of social harmony and the need for a nationwide consensus on curbing intolerance.

The COAS advised against taking the law into one’s hands when legal avenues are available for addressing concerns and grievances. He stressed that arbitrary actions based on heresy undermine societal outlook. He also reiterated Islam’s eternal message of kindness and benevolence.

General Munir expressed gratitude for the sacrifices made by law enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety and security of Pakistani citizens. This incident underscores the critical role of law enforcement officers like ASP Shehrbano Naqvi in maintaining peace and order in society.
