Former James Bond star George Lazenby has announced his retirement from the entertainment industry at the age of 84. The Australian actor, best known for his role as 007 in the 1969 film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," shared this news with his fans via Instagram.
Lazenby is notable for being the only non-British or Irish actor to play James Bond and is the franchise's shortest-serving lead. In his post, he stated, "This hasn't been an easy decision, but it's time to announce my retirement from work. It's been a fun ride but getting older is no fun." He also announced he would no longer make public appearances, give interviews, or sign autographs. He thanked his fans for their love and support and his manager of 11 years for their representation.
Lazenby’s path to becoming James Bond is unique. Working as a model, he met Bond producer Albert Broccoli in a barber’s shop, leading to an audition and the role of James Bond. Despite being offered to return as Bond, he declined, following advice that the character would seem outdated in the 1970s.
After his brief Bond tenure, Lazenby continued acting, appearing in films and TV series, including the BBC’s "Play For Today" in 1973. He later moved to Hong Kong, starring in three films for Bruce Lee’s production company.
