Imran Khan Picks Barrister Gohar as His Successor for PTI Leadership

Barrister Gohar Khan, a close aide and lawyer of former prime minister Imran Khan, has been nominated as the candidate for the chairmanship of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The announcement came after Imran Khan decided not to contest the intra-party elections, which are scheduled to be held within 20 days as per the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)'s order. The ECP had declared the PTI’s previous intra-party polls as null and void and warned the party of losing its bat symbol if it failed to hold fresh elections.

Imran Khan’s decision to bow out of the chairmanship race was influenced by his legal troubles, as he is currently serving a three-year jail sentence in the Toshakhana corruption case and facing several other charges. He was also disqualified from holding public office for five years by the ECP for hiding his assets and income from the Toshakhana, which is the treasury where gifts from foreign dignitaries are kept.

According to PTI Senior Vice-President Sher Afzal Marwat, Imran Khan has personally endorsed Barrister Gohar as his successor and asked the party workers to support him. “Barrister Gohar will be the PTI’s candidate for chairmanship. The PTI chairman [Imran] has said that Gohar will be his candidate for the post,” Marwat said in a TV interview.

Barrister Gohar Khan is an advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and has represented Imran Khan in various cases. He has a law degree from Wolverhampton University, UK and a master’s degree from Washington School of Law, USA. He has more than 50 reported judgments to his credit on various subjects, including taxation, commercial, corporate, arbitration, banking, and election. He has also appeared before the Supreme Judicial Council, Field General Court Martial, and its Court of Appeal.

Barrister Gohar joined the PTI in July 2022, after leaving the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian (PPPP), for which he had contested the National Assembly elections in 2008 but lost. He is considered to be a loyal and trusted confidant of Imran Khan and has been actively involved in the party’s affairs.

The nomination of Barrister Gohar as the PTI’s chairman candidate marks a major shift in the party’s leadership, as Imran Khan has been at the helm of the party since its inception more than two decades ago. It also poses a challenge for the party to retain its popularity and vote bank in the upcoming general elections, which are slated for February 8, 2024, especially when Imran Khan is behind bars and facing public backlash.
