Imad Wasim to Miss Pakistan’s Opening T20 World Cup Match Against USA

Imad Wasim, Pakistan’s leftarm all-rounder, will not be playing in the opening match of the T20 World Cup 2024 against the United States The match is scheduled to take place tomorrow. This news was confirmed by Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam. He expressed optimism that the all-rounder will soon be fit for the subsequent matches of the premier cricket tournament. “While Imad will miss the first game, we are hopeful that he will join the team in the remaining fixtures,” Azam added.

Imad Wasim, a left-arm spinner, will not be participating in the upcoming clash at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. The reason behind his absence is a side strain. This information was disclosed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday, June.

Imad Wasim, known for his versatile bowling and batting skills, is a key player for the team. His presence in the squad significantly enhances Pakistan’s chances in the mega-event. However, due to discomfort in his right rib cage during a training session last week, just before the fourth T20I match against England, Imad has been advised to rest.

Imad Wasim had previously experienced pain in his right rib cage while practicing in the nets ahead of Pakistan’s fourth and final T20I of a series last month against England in London. He did not participate in the fourth T20I against England on May 30.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) promptly sent him for a scan as a precautionary measure. Consequently, Imad was rested for the final match against England so that he could get match-ready for the T20 World Cup that will take place in the USA and the Caribbean in June.

A medical panel of the PCB recommended the scan and they were closely monitoring Imad’s condition to ensure his fitness for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The medical team is optimistic about his recovery and is taking all necessary steps to ensure he is match-fit against the hosts USA in the first match of the T20 World Cup campaign.

Despite this setback, there is a silver lining for the Pakistani cricket fans. The PCB has confirmed that Imad Wasim is likely to be available for Pakistan’s high-profile match against India on June 9 in New York.

Imad Wasim had earlier decided to retire from all formats of the game but reversed his decision in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup. Since his return to the senior national team in April, he has picked up 6 wickets for Pakistan in as many matches. His performances in these games were impressive, and he was expected to be a part of the playing XI in the T20 World Cup.

Imad Wasim’s contributions to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) were also noteworthy. He played a crucial role in Islamabad United’s title win in the PSL 2024 final by taking a five-wicket haul.

Despite Imad Wasim’s absence, Pakistan has several spin-bowling options in their squad, including leg-spinner Shadab Khan and off-spinner Abrar Ahmed. Mohammad Amir, who was part of the 2009 T20 World Cup-winning squad, is also in the mix after having reversed his retirement call in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup.

Pakistan is in Group A alongside India, USA, Ireland, and Canada. The top two teams will advance to the second round.
