How Lahore Qalandars Earned The Well Deserved Title of ‘PSL’s Juggernauts’

With the PSL well underway, Lahore has separated itself from the pack as the most dominant team in the league. Just how dominant? Well, since the 2020 PSL edition, Quetta Gladiators have won 5 matches. Lahore Qalandars have won 6 in this edition alone. But their success isn’t the result of just one factor: this team is a well-oiled machine made of many successful parts.

Today, we’ll take a look at what makes Lahore’s pride so dominant.

Fierce Bowling Lineup

Lahore Qalandars possess the best bowling lineup in the PSL, and it’s not particularly close. With world-class bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Rashid Khan leading the charge, they have terrorized every single batting lineup they’ve faced.

Shaheen Afridi, who is their captain at just 22 years old, has established himself as one of the best fast bowlers in the world, leading the wicket-taking charts for Lahore Qalandars. Rauf has been equally impressive with his pace and accuracy, while Rashid Khan’s control and variation have made him one of the best T20 bowlers in the world.

In the match against Islamabad United on 27th February, Lahore Qalandars’ bowling lineup restricted them to just 90 runs after giving a target of 201. They ended up winning the match by 110 runs, conceding less than half of what they scored. A truly dominant display.

Player Development Program

Lahore Qalandars player development program has been a crucial factor in their success in the PSL. By identifying and nurturing young talent, they have been able to build a strong and formidable team. Zaman Khan is a prime example of the success of this strategy. After being identified as an emerging talent last year, he has become a specialist in bowling at the death and a regular starter for the team.

Mirza Tahir Baig has also been given a chance to showcase his skills as an opener and has shown good technique and temperament. By investing in their young players and providing them with opportunities to grow and improve, Lahore Qalandars have built a strong foundation for the future.

Captain Fantastic

Shaheen Shah Afridi’s impact on Lahore Qalandars goes beyond his excellent bowling performances. He has also stepped up his batting game, as evidenced by his knock of 58 off 34 balls against Peshawar, where he batted at number 6. His development as a competent batsman is a positive sign not just for Lahore Qalandars, but for Pakistan cricket fans as a whole.

Furthermore, Shaheen Shah Afridi’s leadership has been impressive, with the best winning percentage of any captain in the PSL.

Bold Draft

Lahore Qalandars chose to go against the norm and opted for lesser-known players from abroad, while the rest of the league went after big international names.

  • Despite facing criticism for their draft, their strategy has paid off well. Sikander Raza, Sam Billings, Jordan Cox, and Shane Dadswell have all played pivotal roles in the team’s success.

All of these factors have combined to make Lahore Qalandars the team to beat once again. While teams like Multan, Peshawar, and Islamabad pose a threat, it remains to be seen whether the defending champions can be dethroned.
