Fortune Barishal Dismisses Match-Fixing Rumors Involving Shoaib Malik

In recent developments, Fortune Barishal, a team in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), has dismissed allegations of match-fixing involving Pakistani all-rounder Shoaib Malik. The team’s spokesperson stated that the reports about Malik’s involvement in match-fixing during the BPL 2024 tournament were “baseless”.

Earlier today, rumors circulated that Fortune Barishal had terminated Malik’s contract due to suspicions of match-fixing. The 41-year-old cricketer, who played three matches for the franchise in the Mirpur leg of the tournament, found himself at the center of these allegations.

Mizanur Rehman, the owner of Fortune Barishal, praised Malik as a good cricketer and commended his performance for the team. He confirmed in a video message that Malik’s departure from the BPL was due to personal reasons, not any misconduct. Rehman emphasized, “We do not have any complaint against Shoaib Malik,” urging people not to create unnecessary controversy.

The rumors originated after Malik bowled three no-balls in the same over against Khulna Riders, scoring just five runs off six balls with the bat during that game. This match took place on January 22.

Malik also took to his X account, formerly known as Twitter, to address the rumors. He strongly refuted the baseless rumors about match-fixing, stating, “I want to make it clear that I strongly refute these baseless rumours. It’s crucial for everyone to verify information before believing and spreading it.”

He explained that he had a thorough discussion with the team captain, Tamim Iqbal, and they mutually planned the way forward. Malik had to leave Bangladesh for a pre-committed media engagement in Dubai. He extended his best wishes to Fortune Barishal for their upcoming matches and assured his availability to support the team in the future.

Malik emphasized the importance of exercising caution when it comes to rumors, stating, “Falsehoods can harm reputations and create unnecessary confusion. Let’s prioritize accuracy and rely on credible sources to ensure a clear understanding of the facts.”
