International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 is not just about reflection—it is a call for action. The theme for this year, “Accelerate Action,” emphasizes the need to speed up progress toward gender equality. At the current rate of change, it will take 133 years to close the gender gap. That means full gender parity will not be achieved until 2158—five generations from now.
This is unacceptable. Change is happening, but it is happening too slowly. We must break barriers faster, challenge inequality strongly, and amplify the voices of women and girls louder than ever before. Together, we can #AccelerateAction to ensure every woman and girl has the opportunity to lead, thrive, and shape the future.
Women Leading the Way
Women worldwide are reshaping industries, challenging norms, and rewriting history. They are scientists, activists, business leaders, athletes, educators, and innovators, proving that leadership has no gender.
Progress Worth Celebrating
- In Pakistan, women are stepping into leadership like never before. Figures like Malala Yousafzai continue to inspire global movements for girls’ education, while businesswomen like Jehan Ara are reshaping the tech industry and mentoring future female leaders.
- More Pakistani women are entering STEM careers, with initiatives encouraging young girls to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
- Women entrepreneurs are fueling the economy, with Pakistan witnessing a surge in women-led startups and small businesses.
- Women’s participation in governance is increasing, with more female politicians and activists advocating for policy changes.
But while progress is real, it is not enough. Women still face workplace discrimination, unequal pay, restricted access to education, and gender-based violence. At the current pace, true gender equality remains over a century away. That is why we must act now.

- Gender-based violence remains one of the biggest crises for women in Pakistan and beyond. Every day, women and girls face harassment, domestic abuse, and even honor-based crimes.
- The gender pay gap persists, preventing women from achieving full economic independence. Women in Pakistan earn 34% less than men for the same work.
- Access to quality education remains a challenge for girls, especially in rural areas where social and economic barriers keep them from attending school.
- Women continue to be underrepresented in leadership roles, whether in business, politics, or decision-making positions.
