Current trends in cybercrime and how to stay protected?

As time passes and new threats appear, the present status of cybersecurity is constantly changing. As more and more things are hooked up to the internet, hackers have more ways in. Cyber assaults may happen to any company, no matter how big or little, and the resulting financial and public relations losses can be devastating.

You may take several countermeasures to prevent becoming a victim of cybercrime. Firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, and encryption are security measures businesses use to respond to these dangers.

Measures of protection

Let us look into some ways to protect yourself against lingering threats of cybercrimes:

  • Be sure to update your programs and operating systems regularly.  As soon as a software update becomes available, it should be installed as it may include critical security fixes for flaws in older versions of the software.
  • To prevent hackers from gaining access to your computer or network, install a firewall.
  • It is essential to have anti-virus and anti-malware software installed on your computer, as they can help you identify and eliminate any malicious software that may be causing problems.
  • Passwords should be complex and different for each online account you have. Never use the same password twice, and include at least one number and unique character.
  • When opening files or clicking on links, use caution. Do not open files sent to you by someone you do not know or trust.
  • Use a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt your web traffic and shield your data from prying eyes on public hotspots.
  • Always keep an eye out for phishing scams: Avoid giving out personal information in response to any calls, texts, or emails that come out of the blue.
  • If you want to avoid losing access to crucial data if your computer is lost, stolen, or destroyed, regularly back it up on an external hard drive or cloud service.
  • Keep in mind whom you share information with and what you disclose on social media.

Helplines in Pakistan

In Pakistan, cybercrime victims may get help from a select few organizations.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FIA)

Pakistan’s leading cybercrime investigator is the FIA. In addition to conducting investigations and making arrests in connection to cybercrime, they also provide aid to victims of cybercrime and the persons and businesses harmed by it.

The Pakistan Telecom Regulatory Authority (PTA)

Pakistan’s PTA regulates telecommunications. They help victims of cybercrime and increase awareness about cybersecurity.

The National Cyber Incident Response Team (NCIRT)

When cybercrime occurs in Pakistan, it is the job of NR3C, a specialist body, to react. They help people and businesses recover from the effects of cybercrime, investigate the phenomenon, and apprehend those responsibly.
