Babar, Shaheen Lead Pakistan’s Run and Wicket Charts in 2023; Bismah, Nashra Excel in Women’s Cricket

Pakistan’s cricket team may have had a disappointing exit from the 2023 World Cup, but some of their players still managed to impress with their individual performances throughout the year. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) released a statement on Monday, highlighting the achievements of some of their top performers in 2023.

According to the PCB, former captain Babar Azam and fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi were the leading run-scorer and wicket-taker for Pakistan in international cricket in 2023. Babar, who stepped down as the all-format captain in November after Pakistan failed to qualify for the World Cup semi-finals, scored 1,399 runs from 35 matches across formats, with three centuries and 10 fifties. He also retained his No.1 spot in the ODI batters’ rankings and was named the ICC ODI Player of the Year.

Following Babar’s resignation, fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi was appointed captain of the Pakistan T20 team. The left-arm pacer took 62 wickets in 30 matches at an average of 27.80 in 2023.

In the women’s team, former captain Bismah Maroof was the leading run-getter for Pakistan with 624 runs from 25 matches in 2023, which included three half-centuries. Also, Nashra Sundhu was the top wicket-taker for Pakistan in international matches in 2023, taking 30 wickets from 24 matches at an average of 23.13.

The PCB also praised the performances of other players such as Mohammad Rizwan, Abdullah Shafiq, Nida Dar, Muneeba Ali, and Aliya Riaz, who contributed to Pakistan’s success in various formats and tournaments in 2023. The PCB said it was proud of the achievements of its players and hoped that they would continue to perform well in the upcoming challenges in 2024.
